April Fruit of the Month: Kumquats

Spring is here, and with it comes a burst of bright, tangy flavors! April’s Fruit of the Month is kumquats—small, citrusy gems packed with sweet-tart goodness and nutritional benefits. If you’ve never tried them before, now is the perfect time to add them to your shopping list.

The Nutritional Benefits of Kumquats

Kumquats (pronounced KUM-kwats) are tiny, oval-shaped citrus fruits that resemble mini oranges. Unlike most citrus fruits, their thin, edible skin is sweet, while the flesh inside is tart and zesty. This unique contrast makes them a flavorful addition to both sweet and savory dishes.

  • Kumquats are high in Vitamin C, which boosts immunity and keeps skin healthy.
  • Rich in fiber, they support digestion and keep you feeling full.
  • This little fruit is packed full of antioxidants, which fight oxidative stress and inflammation.
  • They’re also low in calories, making them a nice guilt-free snack that satisfies your sweet tooth.

Did You Know?

  • Kumquats are one of the few citrus fruits that you can eat whole—skin and all (like February’s Fruit of the Month, Guava!)
  • The name “kumquat” comes from the Cantonese word meaning “golden orange.”
  • These tiny fruits thrive in warm climates and are often used as ornamental trees.

Shopping For and Storing Kumquats

  • Look for kumquats that are bright orange, firm, and free of soft spots. The skin should be glossy and smooth.
  • Keep fresh kumquats at room temperature for a few days or refrigerate them in a breathable container for up to two weeks. For longer storage, you can freeze kumquat slices or turn them into preserves.
